I am currently a PhD student in the Institut Jean Nicod, Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris (doctoral school ED540). My research is supervised jointly by Uriah Kriegel and Frédérique de Vignemont, it is financed by Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL) University.

Research project

I’m working in philosophy of mind, with a focus on perception. The main topic of my PhD project is to characterise the perception/cognition divide in such a way that both intuitive boundaries between perception and cognition on the one hand and their interface on the other hand can be accounted for. Characterising the distinction between perception and cognition seems crucial to several debates in philosophy of mind, in epistemology and philosophy of science. Is there one distinction between perception and cognition or many ? Is there continuity or discontinuity between those mental capacities ? In other words, is the distinction a distinction in kind or in degree ? If a distinction has to be drawn, how is it to be characterised ? These discussions have consequences for alive debates in philosophy of mind and cognitive science about the architecture of mental capacities (e.g. the cognitive penetrability of perception), theories about the source of justification of beliefs, or the interface between perceptual states and cognitive states. In this project, I am both discussing traditionnal criteria (e.g. nonconceptual content of perceptual experience, format of encoding of information, modularity of perception) in the light of recent philosophical and empirical studies and exploring new criteria such as stimulus-dependence of perception or biological functions.

Previous education : I did a Master in Cognitive Science (Paris V / EHESS/ ENS). My two master internships focused on the subjects of synaesthesia and perception and were done in the Institut Jean Nicod and at the University of Glasgow under the supervision of J. Dokic, F. De Vignemont and F. Macpherson. I also had the opportunity to do a 2-months internship in the Laboratoire des Systèmes Perceptifs (CNRS, ENS) under the supervision of D. Pressnitzer and J. Lorenceau on the subject of detection of visual patterns.

I also hold a Master’s degree in Management and Finance of innovation (Neoma Business School).
