"The Attraction of Skepticism: Perspectives from Lexical Acquisition and Evolution"
Abstract:
Do you know you are not dreaming or bring deceived by an evil demon? Even if you are convinced that you know these propositions, the judgment that you do not know them is still gripping. But why are we attracted to skeptical judgments? John Hawthorne, Timothy Williamson and Jennifer Nagel have (separately) suggested explanations for these tendencies. After arguing against these accounts, I propose that we look at lexical acquisition and evolutionary theory for a more satisfying explanation.
