The link between Cognitive Science and education has strengthened, revealing multiple potential benefits.
For example, CS is providing valuable insights across the breadth of learning capacities: from typically developing subjects to the extremes of learning pathologies such as pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), attention deficit disorder (ADD) and dys disorders (dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysphasia, dyscalculia, etc.) This work is a valuable compass to educators and instructional design engineers for developing methods best suited to the human brain.
CS is also laying the groundwork for testing the efficiency of different strategies and educational technologies. The scientific process is a time-tested method that can provide the framework to an evidence-based attitude towards educational best practices, complimentary to other approaches and existing methods.
In order to fertilize this fruitful meeting between education and cognitive science, it is necessary to establish a translational research plan, similar to the steps taken in translational medicine.
The goal of this seminar is to contribute to the development of research ideas and advance translational implementation, by: convening cross-disciplinary actors from CS, reviewing the existing literature on the subject, identifying promising themes for better understanding the challenges of current issues and providing consultation to educational design.
Topics to be explored this 2014-2015 season will include:
- Cognitive mechanics of the teacher: Up until recently, the cognitive processes of the learner have dominated CS research. We hope to further exploration into the teaching perspective. This type of research should take center stage as the importance of a good teacher has been identified as crucial to school learning.
- Digital Classrooms: Are screens viable as teachers?
- Examination of various ideas from Folk Pedagogy.
- Exploring how the study of autistic teachers can provide insights to the ToM capacities often credited to good teaching capacities.
- In-depth looks into the cognitive process used in learning at school in central subject matters such as math and reading.
Seminar Logisitics: 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month, from 16:30 to 18:00 in the Pavillon Jardin conference room (29 rue d’Ulm), one invitee per seminar presents his/her work. All participants will be alerted to the text to read in preparation for each seminar. All members present at the seminar will produce a text of 4 pages in relationship with the intervention. All texts are published on the seminar’s dedicated space.
