Pr Rowan Hall Maudslay "Decoding Tupaia’s Map"

Le jeudi 23 avril, de 9 h à 11 h, le professeur Rowan HALL MAUDSLAY (chaire d’Excellence CultureLab du PSL) présentera ses travaux consacrés à la carte de Tupaia lors du séminaire « Navigations ». 

One of the most curious artefacts to emerge from early European contact with Polynesian islanders is “Tupaia’s map”. Dubbed “the Rosetta Stone of Polynesian navigation”, it is a map produced by a Polynesian master navigator using a non-standard representational scheme. In this talk, I will describe ongoing work in which I am using computational methods to decipher the hidden logic of the map.
