Title : "Contingent A Priori Truths and Performative Verbs"

Abstract:

In this paper I first review the classic examples of contingent a priori truths introduced by Kripke (1980) and Kaplan (1989). I also discuss some standard reactions to these cases, especially the objections raised by Dummett (1973), Donnellan (1977), Evans (1979) and Soames (2003, 2005), among others, as well as some defenses of them (e.g., Jeshion (2001) and Williamson (1986)). I shall present reasons for considering none of these objections or defenses as quite satisfactory. Finally, I shall present an alternative approach that explores Austin’s notion of performative verbs.
