The Perception team, co-directed by Roberto Casati and Jérôme Dokic, organizes a number of seminars on topics at the interface between conceptual and empirical research on perception. These seminars will be the occasion either to learn about the work in progress of the team members or to meet invited speakers. The main axes of the research of the team are the nature of perception, perceptual feelings, and the perception of/by cognitive artifacts.

"Color: An Ecological Approach"
Abstract: In the philosophical tradition, there seems to be a bias against color as something truly useful to our experience of the world around us. In an attempt to question this assumption, I would like to explore the ecological role of color. I will look into its relation to space through light, surface, contour, volume, and materiality. I will argue that the information color provides crucially rests on context, and conclude that it is perhaps the misunderstanding of this context-dependence of color that obscures its informational role.

“There are no holes in conscious vision”
Abstract: Conscious visual experience is replete, containing no holes. There are two plausible means of cashing out the notion of a hole. I will focus on one type and give reasons one might suspect that such holes occur. Then I’ll argue on empirical grounds that it is unlikely that they do occur. I’ll then consider consequences of this conclusion for different theories of consciousness.
