LINGUAE
Languages In Nature : Grammars, Universals, Analyses and Experiments
Lecture I : Musical Syntax and Its Relation to Linguistic Syntax
Monday, November 19th, 2012 -11am-1pm Salle 2, Collège de France, 11,
place Marcelin Berthelot
Topic : This is a rather general talk, giving an overview of shared
and unshared features between the two capacities, using the Beatles’
song "Yesterday" as illustration and concluding with my particular
perspective on the origins of language and music.
Lecture II : The Sounds of Poetry Viewed as Music
Wednesday, November 21st, 2012 - 11am-1pm - Salle de Réunion IJN-LSCP, Pavillon, Ecole Normale Supérieure, 29, rue d’Ulm
Topic : This talk is fairly technical, using a poem by Robert Frost as
illustration. The emphasis is on shared features of language and
music, largely through prosodic structures.
Lecture III : Tonal Space, Motion, and Force
Friday, Friday, November 23rd, 2012 - 11am-1pm - Salle de Réunion
IJN-LSCP, Pavillon, Ecole Normale Supérieure, 29, rue d’Ulm
Topic : This talk focuses on structures that belong to music but not
language. I illustrate with the Schubert song "Morgengruss" and show
in some detail where parallels between music and language break down.
