Abstracts

Lecture 1 : Norms for real world argument

Some arguments seem stronger than others, but is this more than an arbitrary subjective preference ? The talk details the project of trying to provide a robust, inter-subjectively acceptable, normative basis for "argument quality". Both theoretical foundations and implications for empirical work in philosophy, psychology or linguistics are described.

Lecture 2 : Inference from absence in language and thought

Arguments from ignorance - that is, the absence of evidence- were long viewed as fallacious. In fact, they arguably play a role in syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Examples from these domains are discussed and analysed and the implications of the use of probability theory as a general framework for inference are drawn out.

The Annual LINGUAE Lectures are given by some of the most prominent researchers on topics of current relevance to the interdisciplinary study of language. They are meant to provide a snapshot of what we at ENS-IJN’s Linguae group take to be the most exciting research on language in fields as diverse as linguistics, psycholinguistics, philosophy, logic, primatology, musicology, and various areas of cognitive science.

All are welcome !
