Dan Sperber is a French social and cognitive scientist. He is
the author of Rethinking Symbolism (Cambridge UP 1975), On
Anthropological Knowledge (Cambridge UP 1985), Explaining Culture
(Blackwell 1996). In these three books, he has developed a naturalistic
approach to culture under the name of "epidemiology of representations". Dan
Sperber is also the co-author, with Deirdre Wilson (Department of Linguistics,
University College, London) of Relevance: Communication and Cognition
(Blackwell 1986 - Second Revised Edition, 1995). Dan Sperber and Deirdre
Wilson have developed a cognitive approach to communication known as "Relevance
Theory". Both the epidemiology of representations and relevance theory have been
influential and also controversial.

Dan Sperber holds a research professorship at the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Paris, and has held visiting positions at Cambridge University, the British Academy, University College London, the London School of Economics, the Van Leer Institute in Jerusalem, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, Princeton University, the University of Michigan, the University of Bologna, the University of Hong-Kong, and the University of Chicago.

Dan Sperber est un chercheur en sciences
sociales et cognitives. Il est l'auteur de Le Structuralisme en
anthropologie (Seuil 1968/1973), Le Symbolisme en général (Hermann
1974), Le Savoir des anthropologues (Hermann 1982), et La Contagion
des Idées (Odile Jacob 1996). Dans ces trois livres, il a développé une
conception naturaliste de la culture sous le nom d'épidémiologie des
représentations. Dan Sperber est aussi le co-auteur, avec Deirdre Wilson de
l'Université de Londres de La Pertinence, Communication et Cognition
(Minuit 1989 - Seconde Edition révisée en anglais: Relevance:
Communication and Cognition Second Edition, Blackwell 1995). Ensemble ils
ont développé une conception cognitive de la communication sous le nom de
Théorie de la pertinence. L'épidémiologie de représentations et la théorie de
la pertinence ont l'une et l'autre suscité de nouvelles recherches et aussi
des controverses.

Dan Sperber est directeur de recherche au
CNRS. Il a mené des recherches ou enseigné à l'Université de Cambridge, la British Academy, l'University College de Londres, la London School of Economics, le Van Leer Institute à Jerusalem, l'Institute for Advanced Study à Princeton, l'Université de Princeton, l'Université du Michigan, l'Université de Bologna, l'Université de Hong-Kong et l'Université de Chicago.
