Alva Noë

Alva Noe is a philosopher at UC Berkeley working on perception and consciousness. He visited IJN during 2002 and 2003. He has developed, with Kevin O'Regan, a theory of perception called the sensorimotor or enactive approach. Noe received his PhD from Harvard in 1995. He also received a B.Phil from Oxford in 1988 and a BA from Columbia in 1986. He has written numerous articles on topics in the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of cognitive science, and other topics. He is the editor of IS THE VISUAL WORLD A GRAND ILLUSION (Thorverton, 2002), and (with Evan Thompson) VISION AND MIND: SELECTED READINGS IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF PERCEPTION (MIT Press, 2002). Noe is currently at work on two books: ACTION IN PERCEPTION (MIT Press, forthcoming) and (with J. Kevin O'Regan) PERCEPTION AND CONSCIOUSNESS: A SENSORIMOTOR APPROACH. He will be visiting the Institut until 30 April 2003
