Directrice de LANGAGE, PENSÉE ET COMPORTEMENT

I have a background in Classics (Latin and Greek), Oriental Languages (Sanksrit, Vedic and Pali) and Linguistics (University of Lausanne). I am a formal sematicists working mainly on Modality.

I am the author of Truth and Veridicality in Grammar and Thought (University of Chicago Press 2021) and Modal Sentences (forthcoming in 2026 with Cambridge University Press). I have also written numerous papers on mood and modality, time and modality, modality and speech acts, and the modality of the future.

My central research question concerns the distinction between objective and subjective truth, and the many shades of uncertainty and bias that languages encode. My current work on these themes is part of the Phronesis project, which lies at the heart of the newly founded IRL HumanitiesPlus as a lab common to the CNRS and the University of Chicago.

Since 2017, I have extended my theoretical and formal research into the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). Within this framework, I developed a hybrid AI system designed to detect emergencies in ecological crises (Project INTACT). I am also now working on HOPE detection and grounding in social networks ; I collaborate with several research groups across the country and beyond on the broader issue of misinformation.
