LANGUAGE, THOUGHT AND BEHAVIOR

Marta Abrusan is a linguist specialising in the study of meaning and language use. She has worked on three main areas : (a) Developing a theory according to which certain apparent grammatical violations can be reduced to semantic and pragmatic considerations. (b) The study of the problem of presuppositions in natural language, in particular the question of what their cognitive origins might be. (c) In collaboration with colleagues in Toulouse, N. Asher and T. van de Cruys, she studied ways of combining formal semantics with a computational approach to meaning called distributional semantics.

Her current research focuses on understanding perspective shift in natural language, and its relation to presuppositions and discourse interpretation in general.
