Professor of Cognitive Sciences at Humboldt-Universität

Manfred Krifka received his degrees at the University of Munich in 1986 in Linguistics, Logic and Philosophy. He has worked at the University of Tübingen, at the University of Texas atAustin, and at Humboldt-University in Berlin. In 2001 he was appointed director ofZAS, nowLeibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft. His work focuses on the study of meaning of natural languages and how meaning relates to syntactic structure and to pragmatic principles of interpretation. In particular, he worked on aspect, generics, habituality, quantification, negation, questions, polarity items, discourse particles and the mass/count distinction. He also contributed to the study of topic, focus, presuppositions and anaphoric reference. His recent work resulted in an ERC Advanced Grant “Speech Acts in Grammar and Discourse”. He is also involved in the study of Daakie, a small language on the island of Ambrym, Vanuatu.
