Research project:

My research in the field ofmetaphysics focuses on the one and many problem. This research is organized along the following lines :
1) I adresse the relation of properties to property instances and property exemplifications, the relationnal nexus or tie (from Armstrong, Bacon, Bergmann, Campbell, Cocchiarella, Lowe, Loux, Maurin, Mertz, Wolterstorff). This can be stated as the « One-over-Many » problem.
2) I discuss the basic relation of standard extensional mereology, that of « parthood », and focus on the ontological priority of the whole over the parts – thus, I intend to build a neoclassical mereology through types of neoclassical sums (structured sums, internally dependent sums, non unique sums). The composition question falls within the scope of this research, in particular through a critique of the composition as identity axiom. This can be stated as « The Many in One » problem.
3) Both issues relate back to Plato’s Parmenides : the « Third Man Argument » on the one side (from Vlastos to Pelletier - Zalta), the various mereological relations in the second part of the Parmenides on the other side (Harte, Kutschera, McCabe). A related issue is that of the mereotopological relations in the second part of the Parmenides (an application of Smith and Varzi).
4) Those issues fall within the scope of contemporary analytic treatment of the Parmenides : Zalta on abstract objects, Koslicki on parts and wholes, Schaffer on monism, Pelletier on mass terms, Yi on mass nouns, plural objects and numbers.

PHD (3rd Year) : "A new mereological interpretation of Plato’s Parmenides", under the joint supervision of F. Nef (Dir. d’études, EHESS) and F. Wolff (Prof., ENS-Ulm-Dir. De recherches, Paris IV).
