Dominique Sportiche studied linguistics at MIT (PhD, linguistics, MIT 1984). He has been working at UCLA since 1987 where he is Professor of Linguistics. He joined Institut Jean NIcod in 2004, and was adjunct Professor of Linguistics in the Department of Cognitive Studies of the Ecole normale supérieure between 2004 and 2012. His work has focalized on the theory of syntax and of the syntax/interpretation interface in natural languages. He has worked extensively on Phrase structure theory, Floating quantifiers, Clitics Constructions and various topics in French and Romance syntax. His most recent work deals with Binding and Scope reconstruction paradoxes, Relative clauses, and Phylogenetic approaches to language change.

He has variously taught linguistics or done research at the University of Québec in Montréal, McGill University, USC, University of Utrecht, University of Sao Paulo, University of Pennsylvania, University of Venice, University of Vienna, among others.
