Sailors, including fishers, moved from coasting, eye-balling the next visible landmark ; to high sea navigation, through mastering astronomic navigation ; to GPS-assisted navigation, delegating to technological proxies. In these and other modalities of being-at-sea, the engagement with the environment undergoes subtle but dramatic changes. Not only sailors lose basic orientation and navigation skills ; they also engage in different ways the environment. Direct observation, for one thing, is no longer required to perform a large number of navigational operations. The internship explores the ways the environment is at risk of being actually lost because it no longer observed.

Spin off : discussing the mechanization of fishing and its consequence for the relationship of humans to marine ecology.
