ACTION, PERCEPTION, INTENTIONALITY, CONSCIOUSNESS (A.P.I.C.)

2002-2003: Perspectives and Frames of Reference

These topics are dimensions in a network of philosophical problems with which the APIC on-going seminar is aimed at dealing.

Intentionality is the representational capacity of a material structure. The first kind of problems to solve is whether a system endowed with intentionality has to have a perceptual system with specific properties,
and which kind of actions he must be capable of in contrast with a system not so endowed.

A second group of problems has to do with the relationship between intentionality and consciousness : what exactly is the property of a having a conscious mental state ? In which respect does "being aware"
complete, or add entertaining mental content ? What disitnguishes a first-person person from a third-person perspective ? What is the role of demonstratives in mental contents ?

A third group of problems has to do with perceptual awareness and its relations with self-awareness and the awareness of agency. Is a capacity to represent others' actions or one's own in a specific way a
condition for representing others and self as rational agents ? What links can be discovered between having a theory of mind and entertaining mental imagery of others' actions and of one's own ?

A group of researchers from Institut Jean-Nicod interact in a regular workshop with other philosophers and cognitive scientists to explore various ways of responding to these questions. The APIC workshop
meets from October to May once a month. A one or two-day conference is organized each year. Proceedings are published in French or in English in collective books.

Financing

For the last two years, the workshop have been financed by the Ile-de-France Network of Cognitive Science (Risc). Funds for international exchanges were granted by the British Council during the period
1998-2000.

The topics of the last years have been the following

Intermodal perception and the question of Molyneux (1997-1998)

Non conceptual content of perception and action (1998-1999)

Simulation, Emotion and action (1999-2000)

Episodic memory (2000-2001).
