Cognition and metacognition are inherently error-prone, including failures of memory, ambiguities of perception, failures of imagery, false beliefs, and mistakes of identity. Minds must monitor i.e. detect, and correct these errors. The signals they use to do so may be implicit or explicit, conscious our unconscious, and may even have distinctive fMRI or ERP signatures. Our conference will consider mental fallibilities from a variety of cognitive science, philosophy and neuroscience perspective, and examine how and to which extent metacognition is able to cope with them.
